Security personnel at the Aflao border in the Volta Region, on Wednesday evening, seized twelve single barreled rifles from a man believed to be from Benin.
The suspect was caught when he attempted to use an unapproved route from Ghana to Benin.
Confirming the arrest to Citi News, the Immigration Commander at the Aflao border Julius Gborglah, said the twelve weapons were hidden in a fertilizer sack.
“He was carrying a sack and trying to use an unapproved route to Ghana and the officers on patrol intercepted him and upon interrogation we retrieved twelve pieces of the single barreled rifle concealed in a sack”, he said.
Mr. Gborglah added that the suspect indicated that he was transporting the rifles to Cote D’ivoire and not Ghana.
The suspect has been handed over to the police for further investigations, he said.
There have been recent arm seizures in other parts of the country raising security concerns particularly ahead of the November elections.

Customs officials at the eastern border town of Aflao in the Volta Region recently seized one million packs of short gun cartridges or bullets together with sealed packs of dry leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp (wee).
The arrest was made at Kpoglo customs barrier.
According to officials at the Aflao border where the arrest was made, the same vehicle had made about six entries into Ghana per their records, and it is feared the same items might have been carted into the country from either Nigeria or Togo.
The ammunitions were conveyed in a Nigerian registered Mercedes Benz truck with registration number Lagos: KTU 444 XD.
The arrest was effected by two officers who following a tip-off, stopped the vehicle at the barrier and upon interrogation pressed for further checks on the vehicle.
The ammunition, consisting of short gun cartridges were found in a compartment of the truck which was coming from Togo to an unknown destination.
The driver of the vehicle and his two accomplices who are suspected to be Nigerians have since fled, as there were only two officials on duty.
