The youngest son of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Sekou Nkrumah has called on the newly elected flagbearer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, to forget about winning the 2016 General Elections.
Sekou, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Programme on Monday, February 1, 2016, said the CPP does not have the wherewithal to win power anytime soon.
“I think the CPP doesn’t have what it takes to win the Presidency now…winning the presidency is way beyond the CPP and Ivor must forget about it at least for now…,” he said.
Greenstreet garnered 1,288 votes representing 64% of the valid votes cast while Samia won 579 votes.
Other candidates, Joseph Agyepong and Bright Akwetey secured 83 and 42 votes respectively.
The total votes cast was 2006 with 14 rejected ballots.
Many, including political marketer, Dr. Kobby Mensah, have tipped Ivor to pose the greatest threat to Nana Akufo-Addo and President John Mahama.
“I think Ivor poses much threat, I have always been looking forward to this kind of healthy competition and debate between these people…he has shown to be a strong man and I think he would live up to that tag…,” Dr. Mensah argued.
Sekou, however, thinks otherwise and has advised Ivor Greenstreet to instead concentrate on building the grassroots of the party.
This should include concentrating on winning parliamentary elections and present the CPP in a contemporary style.
“CPP can go into an alliance with the big boys – NPP or NDC - and see how they can win as many parliamentary seats as possible… thinking of winning the presidency is just unrealistic…Samia made that mistake and Ivor shouldn’t…,” he said.
