The Minority in Parliament, on Monday called on traditional rulers interested in active partisan politics to abdicate their thrones as the country prepares for the November 7 polls.

They said the 1992 constitution does not permit traditional rulers to actively participate in politics.

At a news conference in Techiman, Mr Kwaku Agyemang Manu, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Dormaa Central and spokesperson for the Minority Caucus in Parliament, said the MPs would continue to give the respect due to chiefs.

The event was attended by Mrs Freda Prempeh, MP for Tano North; Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, MP for Sunyani West; Mr Kwasi Asomah-Cheremeh, MP for Sunyani East; Major (rtd) Derek Oduro, MP for Nkoranza North and other supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr Agyemang-Manu said some chiefs and queen mothers in Brong-Ahafo have openly declared their support for the government through demonstrations and press conferences, a situation he claimed, was a blatant disrespect for the constitution.

“The blatant disregard and violation of the provisions of the 1992 constitution cannot continue the way it is going”, he said.

“It is disheartening for some chiefs and queen mothers to hide in the comfort of their palace and still participate in active politics”, Mr Agyemang-Manu said.
