The Western Regional first vice chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ben Kwaw has called for calm in the Kwesimintsim constituency of the NPP and an end to what he sees as unhealthy internal wrangling in one of the party’s strongholds in the Western Region.
He has also appealed to party supporters in the constituency to resist attempts by some executives of the party to divide their ranks.
Scores of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters stormed the forecourt of the Kwesimintsim constituency office last Friday to stage a peaceful demonstration.
The angry supporters vowed to do everything possible to prevent one of the parliamentary aspirants, Joseph Mensah, from contesting the party’s primary in the area asserting that they did not know Joseph Mensah as a member of the NPP in the constituency.
The supporters were worried that about 10 months to go for the general elections, the Kwesimintsim NPP was yet to get a candidate adding that the situation could affect NPP’s chances.
Joseph Mensah and the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, Joe Baidoe Ansah, filed their nominations to contest the primary, which was expected to have taken place on Saturday, June 13, 2015.
The parliamentary primary was postponed as a result of a dispute over the eligibility of Joseph Mensah to stand for the election.
After the party’s parliamentary vetting process in the constituency, the NPP announced the disqualification of Joseph Mensah, which prompted the aspirant to go to court to seek redress.
Joseph Mensah filed a motion for injunction to restrain the party from holding the election following his disqualification from the contest.
After a protracted court hearing, a Sekondi High Court placed an injunction on the NPP parliamentary primary in the Kwesimintsim Constituency in the Western Region.
Reacting to the issue in an interview, the First Vice chairman of the NPP in the region admitted that the alleged fracas in the Kwesimintsim NPP had persisted for a long time.
He, however, assured that the national hierarchy of the party would soon come out with a decision on the matter in the constituency.
“I can promise you that by the end of next week the fracas in the Kwesimintsim constituency will be put to an end. In fact I wish we would have had candidates in the entire 26 constituencies in the region”, he added.
Meanwhile an ardent supporter of Joe Mensah and the Kwesimintsim constituency organizer of the party, Charles Akoto had denied the assertion that the vetting committee of the party disqualified Mr Mensah after the vetting process.
