The price of a sachet of drinking water (pure water) remains 20 pesewas, despite the announcement by the National Association of Sachet Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) last week, to increase it to 30 pesewas.
The increment, which was to take effect from last Monday, February 1, according to NASPAWAP, has not been effective because the vendors fear it will affect their sales.
They have blamed it on consumers’ unwillingness to patronise the water at the new price.
This came to light when The Ghanaian Times visited areas such as Lapaz, Madina, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Agbogbloshie and Accra Central to ascertain the effect of the new prices.
Rukaya Issa, a sachet water vendor, said a bag of sachet water which they formerly bought at GH¢2.70 was currently being sold at GH¢3.00 but considering the difference, they would rather sell a sachet at 20 pesewas, and still make some profit rather than lose customers who were refusing to buy at the new price.
She said many consumers had expressed their displeasure at the new price.
Madam Asantewaa Bonsu, a wholesaler at Madina, said she still had old stocks and would increase the price after it runs out.
Adwoa Frimponmaa, another vendor, said the increment would not be possible because “consumers will just not buy at the new price”.
She said in order to maintain her customers, she would maintain the old price and make less profit.
