The chief and opinion leaders of Asemasa, a farming community in the Shama District of the Western Region, have cautioned the ruling NDC government to fulfil all developmental promises made to the community before the November 7 general elections.
They say they have decided to take advantage of the country's elections because “you do not see these politicians again once the elections were over”.
According to Nana Asemasa, the NDC promised to rehabilitate the community centre in the run-up to the 2012 elections, but nothing had been done three years on.
“We, therefore, decided to take up the project by ourselves because of the challenges in getting a place to organise community meetings, funerals and other social gatherings.
"Through our own efforts, we have managed to erect the foundation and pillars, but the project has been stalled due to financial challenges.
“We vividly remember that the Member of Parliament for Shama, Gabriel Esselfie, during one of his campaign tours of the community in 2012 had promised to help complete the community centre, and we are, therefore, holding him firmly to that promise,” he stressed.
Nana Asemasa said should the MP fail to construct the project as promised, the community would advise themselves come the elections in November.
The assembly member for the area, Christian Ampah, on his part, said he sent several reminders to the MP and others who promised to come to their aid but no positive response had been received.
He said the community centre was a matter of great concern for the community, adding that “we would not be in the mood for any form of electioneering campaign, let alone voting, if our concerns are not addressed”.
