National Peace Council Joins Mediation Efforts In Tafo

The National Peace Council has joined ongoing mediation efforts aimed at quelling the tensions at Tafo, a Kumasi suburb, where Muslims and non-Muslims have clashed.

The Peace Council has been meeting with the Muslim youth and their elders as well as non-Muslims in the area.

Clashes in the area over a piece of cemetery land led to the death of 25 year old Aminu Suleman while scores of residents were wounded and property destroyed.

Already, some 40 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Speaking to Citi News, Chairman of the National Peace Council, Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, gave assurances that the Peace Council was working with the Police to bring all culprits to book.

He stated that the council had been involved in trying to quell the tensions from the onset of the clashes and that they have since been involved in meetings with the Zongo youth and Tafo leaders ,on ways to facilitate peace in the area.

Rev. Asante also noted that the Peace Council will be meeting with the youth again as the search for peace continues.

“We will be meeting with the young people again and try to foster a platform for dialogue that will bring about lasting peace.”

Rev. Asante further stressed the importance of involving all stakeholders in the peace process and indicated that the police are playing their part by making sure individuals do not take the law into their hands.

“Peace issues are such that it calls for synergy. It is not just the Peace Council that can facilitate peace. The law enforcement agencies are there to ensure that people do not take the law into their hands to address their grievances.”

Meanwhile the National Chief Imam is also in Tafo with a delegation to meet the Tafo Chief, Muslim leaders and other opinions to calm tensions and restore peace.
