Driver�s Mate Killed In Amasaman Crash

A driver’s mate died on the spot while six others sustained several degrees of injuries at “Shikpong- Tele” near Petrol Bay, Amasaman, when a Sprinter commercial bus which they were travelling on was involved in an accident.

The deceased, whose identity was still unknown as at press time yesterday, allegedly attempted to jump out of the vehicle but the vehicle, which somersaulted three times, landed on him.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the driver of the vehicle was sleeping when the accident occurred.

Mr Ebo Quarshie, a resident   who witnessed the accident, said it occurred around 7:41pm Sunday evening.

The Sprinter bus with registration number GW7669-14 was from the Achimota-Ofankor area heading towards Nsawam.

On reaching the Petro Bay area, the vehicle veered off the road and somersaulted three times before landing on the shoulder of the road.

The driver’s mate attempted to jump out of the vehicle but unfortunately the vehicle rather landed on him, killing him instantly.

The witness said there were no other cars following the Sprinter vehicle at the time of the accident.

He said with the help of other drivers, the injured were immediately taken to the Amasaman Government Hospital and the 37 Military Hospital for treatment before the police arrived at the scene.

Meanwhile DSP Amoaku Boansi, the Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) at Amasaman, who confirmed the accident, said the body of the deceased has been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital morgue for preservation.

Some of the injured have been treated and discharged. They are expected to report to the police for their statements to be taken.

He said the driver, who was also injured and receiving treatment, was yet to give his statement to the police.
