How NPP MP Was Killed

Daniel Asiedu, 19, the alleged killer of the late Abuakwa North Member of Parliament (MP), J.B. Danquah-Adu was on Tuesday charged with murder and remanded into police custody by an Accra Magistrate Court.

Daniel told the court which was presided by His Lordship Stephen Owusu that he didn't intend to kill the late legislator and that "I went there to steal and not to kill"

According to the police charge sheet, the accused said he was only defending himself after the late MP caught him stealing. He pulled out his knife and stabbed him several times until he fell down. The case was adjourned to March 1, 2016.

Facts

On February 8, 2016, at about 11:40pm, the deceased came home in his private vehicle driven by his driver, Samuel Berko Sarkodie. The driver handed over the car keys and left to his house in Kasoa.

The deceased retired to his bedroom located upstairs and at about 1:00 am, Daniel who was armed with a catapult, a cutter and a sharp knife climbed to the room of the late MP through a window with a ladder and committed the murder.

"The suspect picked a ladder in the house and climbed to the porch of the top floor and entered the bedroom through the window while the deceased was sleeping. The suspect began to search the room but the deceased woke up and held him. He stabbed the deceased on the right chest above the breast. Deceased held the knife and shouted for help but no one came. The suspect pulled the knife through the deceased hand creating a deep cut in his palm. The deceased who was bleeding profusely fell on the floor by his bed helpless and the suspect stabbed him again in his right chest below the breast"

“The security man who was awoken by the noise of the shout for help called fellow security men from the neighborhood but none of them got close out of fear. They, however, called the police emergency line to inform them. The police arrived and went into the deceased’s bedroom, but he was already dead. The body was conveyed to the police hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy”.

How Daniel Escaped

After realizing that the deceased was almost dead, Daniel left him and took away his two iPhones and a tablet and managed to descend from the top of the back of the house and climbed one of the polytanks in the house and jumped over the electric fence into the adjoining house and escaped.

“Investigations led to the arrest of the suspect who confessed to the crime and stated that he went there to steal but in the process the deceased woke up and held him”.

He was the Abuakwa North Member of Parliament (MP). He lived with his family in a one storey apartment at Shiashie. He was the grandson of late J.B. Danquah, a Ghanaian statesman who played an important role in the pre and post-colonial Ghana.

JB as affectionately called was a chartered accountant, and would have been 51 in July. He left behind a wife and two children.
