PURC To Investigate GWCL For Over-Billing

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), says it will investigate allegations of over-billing by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

Some consumers, who complained to Citi News, alleged that the GWCL has been charging above the recent 67 percent increment approved by PURC in 2015. Some of them forwarded copies of their water bills to Citi FM to prove their case.

The Director of Public Affairs and External Relations of the PURC, Nana Yaa Jantuah, speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, said although they’ve not officially received such complaints, no consumer should be made to pay above the approve increases.

“…Because the increase is just about 67 percent, that’s about GHc2.80 per 1000 liters of water.  We have published the approved tariff on our website. We need to see the bill, we cannot talk in a vacuum and we cannot determine without investigating it,” she noted.

Nana Yaa Jantuah also assured that “we are going to investigate it, for now I can’t determine what the problem is. We have to see the bill, know their consumption rate and any other thing before we can conclude; and if we get about three or four bills, then we will know there is a problem for us to investigate and resolve it.”
