Disband EC's Steering Committee Immediately . . . It Has Been Compromised - Atik

General Secretary of the People's National Convention (PNC) Atik Mohammed says the Electoral Commission (EC) should disband its Steering Committee with immediate effect.

According to him, the Steering Committee has been compromised due to the list of personalities on the Committee.

Civil Society groups have questioned the integrity of some members on the Committee, stressing that those people are well-known activists of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In the heat of arguments regarding the 18-member Elections Steering Committee, the EC has dropped Dr. Karl Mark Arhin from the Committee.

Dr. Arhin had been appointed to the Committee as a representative of the National Service Scheme (NSS) as part of the EC's plan to use National Service personnel as Election Officers.

Also, the National Peace Council Chairman Rev. Emmanuel Asante has disclosed the Council was not consulted before the EC appointed the Executive Secretary of the Council Francis Azumah as a member of the Committee.

To Atik Mohammed, his party will find it difficult cooperating with the members of the Committee that he described as "enemies" of the PNC.

We should dissolve this group. Lets go back to IPAC, reintroduce the idea. Lets discuss the idea first because I think at the end of day, this is even going to create some legal implications. When we finish discussing the idea and say maybe by the schedules that you want to give to the Committee is not a problem; then we can begin to interrogate the names you put before us. We also on our own will do due diligence check on every name you present to us.

I will not allow the PNC to go into an election knowing that the people charged with the day-to-day processes, some of them are enemies . . . That group with immediacy should be disbanded," he said.
