3 Cops, Prison Officer Arrested for Robbery

Three Police Constables and a Prison Warder were on Tuesday arrested in Kumasi by a special Police Task Force for robbing people of their money and mobile phones. They are Constable Enoch A. Ameyaw and Sam Mornah from the Kumasi Police Band Unit while the third Police Constable, Daniel Dufuoh is stationed in Sandema in the Upper East Region and Theophilus Coney is with Kumasi Prisons. The four who have been place in police custody are assisting in investigation. Briefing the media here, Inspector Mohammed Yusif Tanko of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Unit, said the suspects usually hired taxi cabs and moved from one point to the other extorting money, mobile phones and other valuables from the unsuspecting public. He said the Regional Police Administrations attention was drawn to their activities and a task force was set up to monitor them. He said the suspects usually accused their victims of fictitious offences and threaten to cause their arrest if they failed to hand over their cash, mobile phones and other valuables. Luck however, eluded them when, on Tuesday, September 15, they went to Daabau, a suburb of Kumasi, and tried the same tricks at a Pool (smoker) Bar where they had gone to cause a stir. Enoch who had in his possession an AK 47 rifle, fired twice into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd. He said the suspects managed to extort unspecified amounts of money and a mobile phone from the operator of the bar. However, before they could get away with their booty, the task force came on the scene and arrested them. Also impounded in the swoop were two taxi cabs with registration numbers AS 858 Q and GR 9972 Y, which they were using for the operations. The taxi drivers, who escaped from the scene, were later brought back to the police station by their car owners. He said the suspects will soon be arranged before the court for stealing and extortion.
