AMA Reintroduces Taxi Embossment

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that it was prepared to reintroduce the security embossment on taxis operating in the metropolis with effect from March 1, 2016.

The Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Nuumo Blafo III gave the hint to the media when the assembly paid a visit to a selected number of taxi stations at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra. He said the aim of the taxi embossment is to provide maximum security for drivers and passengers. Nuumo Blafo III further added that it was also to assist passengers to retrieve items left in taxis.

The AMA introduced the special numbers on taxi in 2007-2008 when Ghana was celebrating its Golden Jubilee Anniversary and the CAN 2008 African Cup of Nations. Nuumo Blafo asked taxi owners and drivers who don’t have the taxi embossment to strive to get it embossed on their vehicles so as to avoid sanctions from the assembly.

“Taxi drivers who intend to emboss their vehicles are expected to pay an amount of ¢40 while those who already have the numbers but have it wiped off are to come with their numbers and pay a lesser amount,” he stated. He also hinted that vehicles operating in Kasoa have been added to the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) due to the introduction of the BRT buses. The BRT buses will enhance mobility of people by ensuring public transit system in GAMA.

Reverend Yaw Boakye, Chairman of the Circle- UTC Taxi Drivers Union in an interview with The General Telegraph asked the AMA to include commercial vehicles, popularly referred to as ‘trotro’ to the vehicle embossment scheme so as to ensure fairness among vehicles that operate in the metropolis. In his view the move by the AMA though good but was meant to cheat them of their hard earn money.
