Judge Wants Radio Programmes Handled Professionally

Mr. Justice Anin-Yeboah, a Supreme Court Judge, has expressed concern about what he said was is the unprofessional manner in which radio programmes on constitutional and legal issues were handled. He said it was incumbent on proprietors and managers of radio stations to make sure that only people with good legal background were invited to serve as panellists to discuss constitutional and legal matters. "Under no circumstance should they involve those who have no knowledge of the law in the discourse on purely legal matters since this can be counter productive to the administration of justice and the legal system, he said. Mr. Anin-Yeboah was speaking at the inauguration of the Ghana Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (GIALS), a legal scholarship and research institution, in Kumasi. He said issues on legal matters demanded professional approach and as such radio presenters and social commentators who lacked legal education should not be allowed to express just any opinion on them. The Supreme Court Judge said he was happy that Ghana had at long last had an institute with a mission of brain-storming on legal issues. He appealed to the Governing Council to give prompt attention to the Petroleum and Gas Law and Policy because there could be many disputes both local and international, arising out of the oil industry.
