Steering Committee? . . . It Is Not How The Law Works - Former EC Director

Following the adamant of the Electoral Commission to dissolve its 18-member Steering Committee to help in the facilitation of the electoral processes ahead of the November 7 polls this year, former Chief Director of the EC, Mr. Kwame Damoah Agyemang says the duty of the committee has no legal backing.

He explained that though the law allows the Electoral Commissioner, Madam Charlotte Osei to set up a committee, it must be a specialize committee with people with special knowledge to form the taskforce to offer advice to the Electoral Commission and not a Steering Committee.

Buttressing his point on Okay Fm’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Mr. Damoah Agyemang pinpointed that “if you say a Steering Committee, the interpretation is that it is a committee that runs the day to day affairs and gives directives, but that is the function of the Commission.”

“She is relegating her duties to the steering committee and then say she is part of that committee, is that the law working or what else?...the steering committee has no legal backing though the law allows her to set up a committee,” he challenged.

He again chided that it was wrong for Madam Charlotte Osei to make a stance on the voter register issue she had already assigned to a 5-Member Panel to deliberate on before the report was presented to her, stressing her posture on the issue defeated the purpose of the forum.

He therefore debunked the allegations making waves in the media that he [Damoah Agyemang] has said there is a hidden hand manipulating the Madam Charlotte Osei to make certain decisions which tilt towards the ruling NDC government.
