General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to laud the president for accepting to host the two former Guantanamo Bay detainees in the country instead of lambasting him.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia aka Gen. Mosquito, who believes the two, Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby do not pose any threat to the country, said since both of the detainees were not charged for any criminal activities, they should not be deemed to be dangerous.

Government’s decision to accept the two former terror suspects has received widespread condemnation with critics saying the presence of the two Yemenis pose a threat to Ghana's security.

The US government insists the two former detainees pose minimal risk to Ghana’s national security but many say the explanation for accepting the two former terror suspects from the US has not been convincing enough.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hannah Tetteh, in a closed sitting of Members of Parliament on Friday, February 19, 2016 indicated that government signed a memorandum of understanding with the United States government before the detainees were airlifted to Ghana.

MP for Manhyia South, Dr Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, has however accused Ms Tetteh of withholding information on government’s decision to shelter the two ex-Guantanamo Bay detainees in Ghana.

Dr. Opoku-Prempeh said the Minister did not respond to all the issues put before her during the briefing.

“Hanna Tetteh never spoke about the (Rwandan refugees) and the Syrians who are also in town; neither did she speak about the Yemenis who are also in town with fake and visas,” he said.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia in an interview called on the NPP to blame the US government for sending the duo to the country.

“Why should you blame the victims if we don’t even know the crime they committed? The NPP should rather blame the Americans for bringing them and not Mahama or the victims. They should thank Mahama for that bold decision he took” he indicated.

“Have the NPP forgotten that their founder JB Danquah was once a detainee because he was in detention which means that a detainee founded the party and so why should they complain when indeed they have experienced such life before” he queried.

Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah died in the Nsawam Prisons after spending 13 months behind bars under Kwame Nkrumah's Preventive Detention Act (PDA).
