Coastal Sustainable Landscapes Project (CSLP) an environmental NGO, has in collaboration with some farmers in Navrango and Tweakor Number One planted a total of 7,073 various species of economic trees seedlings.
The seedlings include black Mahogany, Emere, Ebako, Prekese, Cassia, Guarea and Kyenkyen.
Mr Richard Adupong, Communication and Outreach Specialist of the NGO, made this known to the GNA on Tuesday at separate meetings at Navrango and Tweakor Number One both near Mpataba.
The meetings were organized by the NGO in collaboration with the farmers at the instance of Mr George William Somiah, the new Jomoro DCE, to enable him familiarize himself with the projects.
He disclosed that a total of 407.79 hectares of farm land has been replanted in five communities including Adusuazo near Half-Assini, Tweakor Number Two and Fawoman.
Mr Adupong said a total of 18,907 tree seedlings have been planted in the five communities across the District from last year.
He said the three year United State Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Project aims at moving Ghana into low greehouse gas emission, high carbon sequestration development pathway in the land use sector among others.
Addressing the meetings, the regents of Navrango and Tweakor Number One, Nana Walter Cudjoe Adzokah and Nana Emmanuel Ayitey respectively, said a total of 175 farmers including 38 women are involved in the project at the area.
According to the regents, the NGO provided the seedlings free-of-charge to the farmers for cultivation in their farms.
They said the trees when matured would be their properties which will offer them great financial relief in future and expressed their profound gratitude to the NGO.
The regents said a Village Savings and Loans Schemes (VSLS) by the farmers was yielding fruitful results.
The VSLS idea was initiated by the NGO in 2014 and had helped many farmers with financial burdens.
Under the VSLS, the members make share purchasing of GHC 2.00 per head weekly for group savings for a period of time; loans are offered to members.
The regents appealed to the DCE to improve their road network from Navrango through Tweakor Number One to Tweakor Number two to facilitate the conveyance of their foodstuffs marketing centres.
They also called for a health facility in the area to save them from travelling 17 kilometres to Samenye for health care.
Mr Steve Dennison, resident Project manager of the NGO, commended the beneficiary farmers for embracing the project and urged them to educate their peers on the importance of the venture.
The DCE said he was happy to see the progress of the project and and urged the farmers to expand their farms.
The DCE had earlier visited some bee keeping and reaforestation farms in both communities and observed share purchasing meeting of the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) at Navrango.
Other dignitaries were Mr Adams Welti, CSLP Programme Manager, Mr Joseph Cudjoe Mono, Assistant Community Liaison Officer, Ankasa Game and Wildlife Reserve and Mr Emmanuel Armoh, Community Development Officer, Jomoro District Assembly.
