Former aide to Nana Akufo-Addo, Abu Jinapor says President John Dramani Mahama's schools-under-trees project is an exercise in mediocrity.

Commenting on the President's State of the Nation Address on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', Abu Jinapor advised President John Mahama to stop touting the project as a major achievement by his government.

During President John Dramani Mahama's SONA at Parliament last Thursday, he reiterated his commitment to building and providing basic necessities to schools in the country to enhance Ghana's education system.

"As a nation, we must and we are creating the necessary opportunities for all children of school going age to have access to quality education. We will continue to deliver social intervention programmes that will sustain access and reduce the cost of education to parents. This year, we will start with the distribution of ten thousand (10,000) locally produced made-in-Ghana school sandals to pupils in selected deprived districts. Six million (6,000,000) textbooks, Five hundred thousand (500,000) pieces of school uniforms, Fifteen million (15,000,000) exercise books, and Thirty thousand (30,000) computers will also be distributed to schools across the country," President Mahama said.

But to Abu Jinapor, all these initiatives are not a novelty in Ghana's education history.

“What government has not built schools and houses in Ghana? That, in itself, like President Mahama rightly put it, is an exercise in mediocrity,” he said.
