Ghana’s number one referral hospital, the Korle Bu-Teaching Hospital, will on Monday, March 7 2016, close down its Eye Centre following some defects in the facility. This was contained in a statement sighted by Citi News. 

This comes after the closure of three clinics  at the hospital in February, which included the General Surgery, Neurosurgery and Urology centres. 

The Eye Centre was built through a Public Private Partnership between Lions Club International, Moorefield Eye hospital in the United Kingdom and the Government of Ghana.

The latest closure according to the statement, is due to poor ventilation and unsafe working environment at the facility.

The statement added that the facility generates a lot of heat because of its glass fitted sliding doors and windows, and also lacked a central cooling system.

It also noted that several complaints by both staff members and patients to address the problem has yielded no results.


“The physical structure has sliding windows, glass and tight wooden doors and other bigger glasses on the various openings of the building. The comfort cooling system (Air extractor) which was provided, failed to yield results. The Central Air conditioner serves the Theatre only; but now [because it is] out of use, it has also led to the temporary closure of the theatre.”

The facility was later said to have received ten standing fans from a benevolent individual, but “these fans only blow hot air.”

“The wards were infested with mosquitos because patients could not sleep without opening the sliding windows down due to the heat. The whole facility is very hot, coupled with rising environmental temperature which led to excessive sweating and dehydration during work. In fact, the facility is a closed one and requires a cooling system than fans to provide human ventilation for service delivery,” the statement added.
