Tension Looms At Nsumia Over Installation Of Non-indigene As Chief

Trouble is gradually brewing at Nsumia, a Ga community in the Amansaman District of the Greater Accra; over attempts by some people to install and impose a non-indigene of the town as chief over the people.

Information gathered from the area is that, the development if not prevented could spark severe clashes which can lead to fatalities.

Residents of the area, according to sources, are up in arms against some people being led by one Ayitey Canada, who have hatched the idea of installing a non native as the chief of Nsumia even though the area has a substantive and legitimate chief.

The Residents are alleging that, Ayitey Canada is leading the agenda to install a new chief knowing very well that the area already has a chief, in order to push their dubious agenda of selling out lands to unsuspecting buyers.

Meanwhile, this paper has gathered that although Ayitey Canada and his group of people are taking these unwelcome steps to install an alien as a chief in a Ga community, the supposed chief to be installed is not in the least willing to take up the responsibility.

However, heads and elders of the Nii Tackie Oblie family of Nsumia are ready to stand against any attempts by anybody to disturb the peace of the community and thus send a strong signal to such people to rescind their decision or face their wrath.

Speaking to Nii Okai Kudja, Chief of Nsumia of Abola-Piam, who is also the substantive chief of the town, revealed that the people of Nsumia are living in absolute peace but the introduction of a new chief who himself is not an indigene of the area could bring serious consequences to the existing peace in the area.

According to him, he has been legitimately installed as a chief of the area who has been recognized by the people as such and that any attempt to impose another chief on the people will be a breach of the laid down chieftaincy rules and customs and hence must not be allowed to happen.

Nii Nsumia also pointed out that the area in question is a Ga community and a Ga land of which no individual from any other tribe has the right over the land not alone taking over as chief.

“This is a Ga land, not an Ayigbe land where a native from the Volta Region will be made a chief over the people. This can never happen anywhere,’ he said.

He also indicated that his people are threatening mayhem over the planned installation of the said new chief since the Nii Tackie Oblie family heads and elders have vowed to stop the installation, describing it as illegal.

Nii Nsumia in an interview with this paper said, he is not calling for any bloodshed and hence appealing to the people planning to do the installation to desist from the act and allow peace to reign.

He however stressed that; the issue could get out of hands if the regional House of Chiefs and the appropriate authorities fail to step in immediately.

“We are appealing to the regional house of chiefs and other stakeholders that the other faction who is planning the installation does not have the right to install a chief. The stool belongs to our family so we want things be,” he said.

“We want the state apparatus to stop the process so that we all go to the regional house of chiefs for them to go into the matter. What they are about to do is illegal and it must be stopped,” he said.
