“Today all those who have insulted me because of false information, I have forgiven them,” says embattled businessman, Alfred Agesi Woyome, after the Court of Appeal, in a unanimous decision, dismissed the state's challenge to his acquittal.
Reiterating his innocence in an interview with the media after an Appeals Court upheld a High Court decision that he committed no crime when government paid him the money as judgement debt in 2010, a bubbly Woyome expressed relief that after nearly five years of court action and media blitz on the scandal, he has been absolved of any criminal act.
On March 12, 2015, Mr Woyome was acquitted and discharged by the High Court, presided over by Mr Justice John Ajet-Nasam, on two counts of defrauding by false pretence and causing financial loss to the state.
Shocked by the ruling, the state filed a notice of appeal a day after his acquittal on the grounds that the trial judge erred in law in freeing the businessman.
But on Thursday March 10, 2016, the Appeals court ruled that the High Court was right in freeing Mr Woyome last year because the state had failed to prove his guilt in a case in which he was accused of defrauding the country of GH₵51 million.
Speaking to journalists after securing his second consecutive victory against the state, Alfred Agbesi Woyome says he has forgiven all those who verbally abused him in the financial scandal.
“I have only one thing to say. I believe in Lord God almighty…I am encouraging you to believe in your God first and also believe in the court system,” he said.
The vindicated NDC financier told journalists seeking his views on the judgment to read the ruling.
“This judgement is comprehensive, take it and read it. It has everything in it,” he added.
