The four-time African champions will be paid bonuses in local currency, according to a new directive.
Ghana’s new minister for sports Nii Lante Vanderpuije says the senior national soccer team will no more receive financial remunerations in foreign currencies.
The Black Stars, over the years, have rejected moves to have their bonuses paid in the local cedi currency – a situation that reared its ugly head at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil.
However, the policy is finally set to come into full force as the newly-appointed minister, who was sworn into office last month, is bent on having the initiative see the light of day.
“I have directed that the bonuses of the Black Stars should be paid in the local currency into their individual accounts,” Vanderpuije told Nhyira FM.
“No player will be receiving bonus in dollars anymore. That is not our currency.
“We are aware that where the players play [abroad], they are not given cash money as their salaries or bonuses. It is paid into their accounts, so we will also do that.
“We will pay the dollar equivalent of the amount agreed upon as their bonus into their accounts. No dollars again.”
Currently on a $10,000-per-player-winning-bonus structure, it is unclear what will be the reaction of the Black Stars to this latest move.
Ghana will play Mozambique in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header later this month.
