Las Palmas doubt Wakasos fitness for Ghana

The Spanish club say they will release the player for national duty as mandated by Fifa but will provide a medical report of his injury.

Ghana will have to assess a medical report on Mubarak Wakaso before the midfielder could be used in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header with Mozambique next week, according to his club Las Palmas.

The 25-year-old playmaker was among 23 players named by Black Stars coach Avram Grant for the upcoming games.

His inclusion came as a surprise to many as the former Villarreal man is currently training away from Las Palmas first team due to an injury sustained during a La Liga action last month.

“UD Las Palmas player Mubarak Wakaso has been called up to the Ghana team that play two official matches against Mozambique on March 24 and 27 in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers,” the club announced on their official website on Thursday.

“Wakaso will travel to his country on Saturday after the release of UD Las Palmas players as well-stipulated in the regulations of Fifa for international matches.

“The player will take a medical report certifying that he is in his last phase of recovery [from injury] to the Ghana Football Association to assess.”

Ghana host the first leg of the qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 24 before the return encounter in Maputo three days later.
