Workshop On Local Governance Processes Opens

A three-day workshop on Local Governance Processes is being held for 35 participants in the Jomoro District to help them to better understand the local government system.

The participants include assembly members, civil society actors and staff of the Jomoro District Assembly.

The programme is organised by the Jomoro District Assembly in collaboration with Friends of the Nation (FoN) with support from OXFARM, both Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

Mr Abudu Amadu, the District Co-ordinating Director, who opened the workshop on behalf of the District Chief Executive, Mr George William Somiah, urged the participants to take it seriously to enable them to get the maximum benefit.

Topics being discussed include; Functions of the Development Planning Unit and Processes involved in the Preparation of the District Medium-Term Development Plan (DMTDP), Status of Implementation of the 2014-2017 DMTDP and Mid-Term Review of the 2014-2017 DMTDP.

The rest are Functions of the Budget Unit and Processes involved in the Preparation of the District Composite Budget, Functions of the Works Department, Procurement Processes and Procedure in Acquiring Building Permit.

Mr Amadu indicated that the Western Regional Co-ordinating Council had commended Jomoro and a few other districts out of the 22 metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies for preparing comprehensive and credible medium-term development plans for 2014 to 2017 calendar years.

Nana Efuah Tweba Ewur, the FoN Monitoring and Evaluation Co-ordinator, giving an overview of the NGO’s activities, said it was a socio-environmental advocacy NGO committed to enhancing active citizenship and social accountability as well as promoting human rights in resource governance.

It engages in advocacy, training, research and networks with other organisations on four thematic areas; Resource Governance, Local Governance, Population, Health & Environmental Education and Enterprise Development.

Ms Ewur said the organisation operated in four coastal areas of the country namely; Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western regions.

Resource persons at the workshop are Mr John De-Graft Abotar, the District Budget Officer, Mr Saaka Alhassan, the District Engineer in-charge of Projects, Mr Anthony Osei Mensah from the Physical Planning Department and Mr Jalil Ali Mahama, the District Planning Officer.
