Medeama 2-0 Al-Ittihad (Agg 2-1): Yellow and Mauves seal Caf Confed spot

Tom Strand’s side scored two first-half goals to see off their Libyan counterparts in the continental competition.

Medeama are through to the second round of the 2016 Caf Confederations Cup following a 2-0 defeat of Libyan side Al-Ittihad Tripoli in the first round second leg encounter on Sunday.

A brace from Abass Mohammed at the Sekondi-Essipong Stadium handed the Ghanaians a ticket to the next phase on a 2-1 aggregate, the first encounter having ended 1-0 in favour of the North Africans.

Coach Tom Strand made three changes to his team that started in the away tie with Emmanuel Yeboah, Abass Mohammed and Samuel Bio replacing Eric Kwakwa, Dominic Eshun and Benjamin Bature.

Medeama kicked off in a frenetic pace in a bid to level the aggregate score as early as possible, eventually opening the scoring after a couple of futile attempts, through Abas Mohammed.

The striker then completed his brace minutes later to hand the Yellow and Mauves a two-goal lead before recess.

Ittihad tried to mount a late challenge in second half, as a goal would have been enough to hand them qualification on away goals rule, but their efforts failed to yield any fruit.

The Ghanaians now await the winner between Congolese side Saint-Eloi Lupopo and Al-Ahly Shendi of Sudan for a date in the next phase.

The second round fixtures come off between April 8 and 20.
