Vienna City Used Expired Fire Extinguishers

The Ghana National Fire Service has indicated that the fire extinguishers at Vienna City at the time of the fire outbreak at the spot had expired.

The police temporarily sealed off the popular night club and entertainment centre located at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, a day after it was razed down by fire.

The move is apparently to prevent people from entering the place to enable officials of the Ghana National Fire Service to continue investigations into what actually caused the inferno that started at about 9:00pm Thursday.

Daily Guide visited the scene yesterday to ascertain the extent of damage by the inferno but this reporter was denied entry into the premises as heavily armed policemen created a human barricade to prevent people from entering the place.

However, preliminary investigations have revealed that the fire that engulfed the night club, mostly patronized by commercial sex workers, was started by a faulty air-conditioner.

It is reported that cash and properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis were destroyed by the fire which lasted for more than an hour. There was no casualty but fire personnel reportedly had a tough time in bringing the fire under control.

Vienna City is directly opposite the Goil filling station which was burnt down in the June 3, 2015 fire-flood disaster that resulted in the untimely death of over 200 persons.

Traders Speak

Daily Guide  spoke to a couple of traders around the club who asserted that they had just closed their shops after the day’s business before the start of the inferno.

Asked whether they were worried about the continuous outbreak of fire in the area, they indicated that it was terrifying to note how the area had become fire prone, but said they would seek divine intervention in bringing the situation under control.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Oko Vanderpuije, has in view of the recurring fire, said that his outfit would engage a spiritualist to unravel the fire conundrum at the place.
