Seeking Spiritual Help Not The Best But Educational

News reports have copiously quoted the Mayor of Accra, Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije as stating that his outfit would consult spiritualists to determine the frequent fire outbreaks in the metropoplis.

“I think the most important thing at this stage is to look at the cause of the fire from the scientific point, the structural point, all the necessary points, aside from the spiritual point; so they will do their job and they will give us the report. Once we get the report, we will go from there…we will let the spiritualists, those in that area of operation to continue to dialogue with us to see what they need to do.”

The move by the AMA Chief Executive arguably is coming in the wake of uncountable fire outbreak in the metropolis with the latest being that of Vienna City Night Club. The Vienna City Night Club, is located at Circle directly opposite, the Goil Filing Station which was razed down by fire almost a year ago resulting in the death of over 156 lives.

The ravaging fire last Thursday destroyed the Vienna City Night Club with a number of things got burned. It was reported however that it was a faulty air-conditioner that caused the fire outbreak. Hundreds of fire outbreaks have since occurred in the nation which included Tema Central Medical Stores, Makola Market, Agbogbloshie market among others.

The General Telegraph believes that seeking spiritual intervention is not the panacea in solving the problems but rather proper education on the use of electrical gadgets, employing experts to install electrical gadgets and also to ensure that National Fire Service plays its major roles.

It is unfortunate that these things are happening despite efforts by many to curb it. Our opposition to seeking spiritual explanation is grounded on the fact that many Men of God gladly prophecy about looming danger with deaths threats and fire outbreaks. Though they are all Ghanaians, it seems they have no antidote to the problems but rather take glory when it occurs that their predictions came to pass.

We believe that engaging residents on the need to use proper materials for buildings and also asking experts to do the right things would not only help prevent the frequent fire outbreaks in the capital but also eliminate it.

The General Telegraph urges the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the National Fire Service and the security to urgently adopt holistic approach in unravelling the mystery of the alarming rate of the fire outbreaks in the nation.
