The District Chief Executive for Akatsi North, Mr. James Gunu, has said security agencies will arrest and prosecute any Fulani whose animals will cause destruction to farms.

He said the Assembly was left with no other choice than to involve the security agencies in the fight to stop the Fulani menace.

“Furthermore, we will ensure that the Fulani’s landlord is also arrested together to face the full rigours of the law,” Mr Gunu warned.

The District Chief Executive disclosed these at the first ordinary meeting of the second session of the Second Assembly at Ave-Dakpa last week Tuesday.

He alleged that some chiefs and wealthy land owners in the district were protecting nomadic Fulani herdsmen for personal gains.

“They continue to offer land to the herdsmen on their arrival and this is seriously thwarting efforts by the district assembly to flush out the impudent nomads whose cattle have destroyed crops on vast lands, unleashing untold grief on farmers in the area,” Mr. Ganu alleged.

“Apart from the massive destruction of the farms, they also pose a security threat to all of us, and so, we cannot allow this trend to continue,” he said.

Mr. Ganu said residents who collaborated with the Fulanis to destroy farms were traitors, and warned that measures were being adopted to fight the menace from within and deal ruthlessly with those unruly characters.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gunu announced that 52 households from 11 communities in the district had enrolled onto the Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty (LEAP) programme.

“The payments to beneficiaries have also been changed from manual to E-payment and they have been issued with E-Zwich cards”, he said.

According to Mr. Gunu, 26 more communities were being considered for enrolment onto the programme.
