The Asokwa police in Kumasi, are investigating a case in which a civilian and a policeman have accused each other of assault.
While the civilian, Elijah Boakye Ansah, 33, is claiming that the policeman, Sergeant Prince Amoh, and four colleagues subjected him to severe beatings, resulting in the damage of his left eardrum, the policeman says he rather was brutally assaulted by the civilian.
In a chat with The Ghanaian Times in the presence of his father, Ansah claimed that in the morning of March 20, he was at home at Atonsu Fabi, when he heard someone banging on the main gate of the house.
According to Ansah, the banging was so hard that he was compelled to ask the one at the gate not to misbehave.
He said when he went to open the gate, he saw Sergeant Amoh furious, asking why he insulted him.
Ansah said he replied that he did not know it was the police banging on the gate.
Ansah claimed that Sergeant Amoh had been to the house once to sleep in a room belonging to his brother who had travelled, and that day, he was there to collect some items from the room.
He said Sergeant Amoh warned that he would see, and then he left.
A few minutes later, Ansah claimed that Sergeant Amoh returned in a police vehicle with four other policemen, two of them armed with AK-47 assault rifles.
According to Ansah, they subjected him to beatings, and later put him in the vehicle to the Asokwa Police Station where he was detained in cells until the following day.
When he was released the following day, Ansah said he went to the Agogo Government Hospital where he was told, after diagnosis, that there was some damage to his left ear.
He, therefore, appealed to the Police Administration for justice.
When contacted, however, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) George Bawa, Asokwa District Police Commander, said, Ansah rather assaulted Sergeant Amoh who reported the matter to a patrol team for his arrest and detention in cells.
According to the District Commander, Ansah assaulted Sergeant Amo physically and verbally, after he tried to deny him entry to the house.
DSP Bawa confirmed that Ansah and his father, Nana Clinton Boakye, came to the police station on Tuesday, March 29, for a medical report and “as we talk, they have not returned with the report to the police”.
He said Ansah had been charged with assault and would be arraigned before court soon.
