I Escaped Death Twice Koala Cabbie

The cabbie who knocked down the robbers of the Koala Shopping Centre marketing clerk has said that he escaped death at the hands of the robbers twice.

According to Nana Yaw, Stanley Obaliko aka Mohammed Sulemana, who was the pillion rider, shot him two times but missed him.

He said Mohammed, after he had been knocked down, picked the gun from the ground after his attempt to kick the weapon from their reach failed.

Yaw stated that he dared the accused to shoot him if he wished.

He was the second prosecution witness in the case that saw him being awarded with a fully furnished house and a car for his bravery.

Led in evidence by Chief Supt Duuti Tuaruka in a court presided over by Aboagye Tandoh, the driver noted that on the day of the incident, he was driving from El-Wak to American House and that on reaching the junction at the American Embassy, he heard a gunshot.

He said getting closer to the scene, he asked a bystander what had happened and was told that some robbers had attacked and shot Lydia Horsu, the victim, who was then lying down.

The cabbie contended that he decided to execute a plan he had in mind to him Mohammed and Oko Quarcoe, 30, unemployed, who were both on the motorbike, to enable the police arrest them.

The witness further disclosed that another man standing nearby, who happened to be a police officer, called a patrol team to arrest the accused persons.

During cross-examination, George Asamaney, lawyer for three other accused persons – Michael Edoe Ahiataku aka Old Soldier, a private security guard; Gilbert Osabutey aka Obolo, shop supervisor and Frederick Sedro Kwame aka Fred, a private security guard-said his clients had no questions for the witness.

Mohammed, who was without a lawyer, accused the driver of laying ambush for them and insisted that there was no gunshot, a claim Yaw refuted.

The accused said he did not point a gun at the driver and that there was no other person sitting in his car beside him.

Oko said he was helpless when he was knocked down by the car, adding the he did not know why they chased the complainant.

He asked the court for forgiveness.

Hearing continues tomorrow.

Mohammed has been slapped with an additional charge of possessing one automatic MAB foreign pistol No. PA151674189 with six live 9mm ammunition and five empty cartridges.

Mohammed and Oko are also standing trial for intentionally and unlawfully causing grievous harm to Lydia.

All the accused persons have denied the charges of conspiracy to rob and robbery.
