EC: "We Are Set For Chereponi By-Election"

Barring any last minute hitches, 23,270 registered voters in the Chereponi Constituency of the Northern Region would on Tuesday, Sept., 29th, cast their ballots in 55 polling stations, to elect a successor to Madam Doris Asibi Seidu former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for the area who died early last month. Political activities are likely to be stepped up in the constituency this weekend by the two major contending political parties with the NPP leaving no stone unturned in its endeavour to retain the seat while the NDC makes frantic efforts to cause an upset. Speaking in an interview with PEACEFM News@Midday, the Northern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Sylvester Kanyi, said everything is set for the election on Tuesday. He indicated that the ballot papers with the photographs of the candidates on them were ready �All election materials are in Chereponi, they are in sufficient quantities and we�re we�ll not face any shortages anywhere. The only thing left is the ballot paper. It will certainly be in today and will be sent to Chereponi tomorrow�everything is in place in Chereponi,� he assured. Five political parties are contesting the Chereponi by-election. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) New Patriotic Party (NPP), People's National Convention (PNC), Democratic People's Party (DPP) and New Vision Party (NVP) are the contesting parties. The Northern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr. Peter Angwubutoge Awuni, had earlier in an press conference some two weeks ago, assured all contesting parties and the public that his outfit would deploy 1,000 police personnel to maintain law and order to ensure a peaceful by-election.
