DCE urges assembly members to support revenue mobilisation efforts

Mr. Robert Baka Wavei, Sissala West District Chief Executive, has appealed to members of the assembly to re-dedicate their efforts towards revenue mobilisation, to undertake more development projects to improve the living standards of the people. He said there could not be any meaningful development if the assembly relied heavily on the District Assemblies Common Fund as a panacea to the development needs of the people. Mr. Wavei made the appeal when he addressed members of the assembly at its 2nd ordinary session at Gwollu on Friday. He noted that the district has huge revenue potential base, but the lack of commitment on the part of assembly members to support revenue collectors had led to their abysmal performance. Mr. Wavei said some unscrupulous revenue collectors had taken advantage of the lackadaisical attitude of members towards their work to reap personal benefits for themselves to the detriment of the district assembly. Such unscrupulous ones should be weeded out of the system. Just take the case of Pulima Area Council, where revenue collection from January to July totalled 2,206.88 Ghana Cedis and yet with the change of revenue collectors, revenue realized from August alone stood at 1,322.50 Ghana Cedis, Mr. Wavei said. The District Assembly collected 16,096.13 Ghana Cedis from January to August this year as against its targeted revenue of 44,730.00 Ghana Cedis. Mr. Wavei announced that the assembly had taken delivery of its share of the 1st quarter of the 2009 common fund totalling 132,785.75 Ghana Cedis and had used part of it to pay off contractors who had undertaken projects in the district.
