The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Sunday, May 1, visited registration centres in the Aowin and Jomoro constituencies as part of his monitoring of the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
In the company of the acting NPP General Secretary, John Boadu; National Women’s Organiser, Otiko Afisa Djaba; Campaign Manager, Peter Mac Manu; NPP parliamentaery candidate for Aowin, Samuel Adu Gyamfi; and acting NPP Western Regional Chairman, Francis Ndede Siah, and other Western Regional NPP executives, Nana Akufo-Addo visited a total of 4 polling stations spread across the two constituencies.
At Nkwanta, Nana Akufo-Addo visited the D/C primary school registration centre, where he was mobbed by the town’s youth.
Visibly excited at the presence of the NPP flagbearer in their town, the youth told Nana Akufo-Addo that they have put their hopes in him, and were going to vote for him so that they could get jobs in the future.
The EC registration official, Isaac Djan, told the NPP flagbearer that a total of 34 first time voters had registered since the exercise began, with the majority of registrants being between the ages of 18 and 19.
At Enchi-Sewum, Nana Akufo-Addo visited the R/C JHS registration centre, where Mr Eric Larweh, the EC officer, also spoke about a small turnout, with only 49 persons registered in the first 3 days of the exercise.
In between the visits to the centres, Nana Akufo-Addo made brief stops at Boinso and Mocherkrom, where he interacted with residents of the two villages. He urged them to repose their confidence in him and the NPP's parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Samuel Adu Gyamfi.
"I want you to trust me and your candidate, Samuel Adu Gyamfi, and vote for us this year. I assure you that we are not coming to steal the nation's money. We are coming to do a job for Ghana, which will ensure that we bring progress and prosperity to every corner of the country," he said.
At the Jema R/C primary school registration centre, Akufo-Addo's last stop in the constituency, he interacted with EC officials and NPP polling agents, who stated that the process had been smooth thus far, with no hitches recorded. Mr. Eric Mannah, the EC officer at the centre, indicated that a total of 100 new voters had been registered, with 19 new registrations having already taken place at the time of Akufo-Addo's visit.
In the Jomoro constituency, Akufo-Addo, accompanied by the NPP parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Paul Essien, visited the Assikofi Square (B) centre, at Elubo, where, as at 12:22pm, only 2 persons had been registered. This was, according to the EC officer in-charge, Ms. Doris Arthur, because registration had to be temporarily suspended due to the breakdown of the biometric voter registration device early in the morning. A backup device was only secured a few minutes prior to the arrival of the NPP flagbearer. Nonetheless, a total of 122 voters had been registered at the centre since April 28, when the exercise began.
He commended NPP agents at these centres for their heightened levels of vigilance since the exercise commenced, and urged them to continue in the same vein until the end of the exercise.
