Police Asked To Stop Arm-Chair Investigations

Police investigators have been urged to thoroughly investigate cases before presenting them to court.

The Commandant of the Ghana Police Command and Staff College, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, said it was about time investigators stopped “arm chair investigations which usually resulted in offenders going unpunished.

The Commandant gave the advice at the closing ceremony of a two week course in techniques in financial crime investigations, at Winneba in the Central Region.

It brought together 51 crime officers from across the country to broaden their knowledge in financial crime in the country.

“As crime officers you must do due diligence before cases are put before court to convince the judges,” she stressed.

She said the course was necessary for the crime officers who supervise criminal investigations to develop their capacity to ensure effective investigations into financial crime cases.

ACP Addo-Danquah said the college had so far upgraded the capacities of 427 officers who were manning various command posts in the service.

She therefore urged them to continue to learn and enhance their capacities.

The representative of the Inspector General of Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Akuribah Yaagy, said financial crime was highly sophiscated following the advent of Information Communication Technology.

DCOP Yaagy, who is the Central Regional Police Commander, said the course would provide them the requisite skills to investigate financial crime cases often reported to the police by the banks.

He stressed the need to also report suspicious money laundering in the country.

“Banks and business firms should also sanction the enforcement of relevant laws through investigations and prosecution where appropriate, rather than protecting criminals for the sake of protecting corporate image,” he said.
