Violence At Registration: We May Consider Using Brutal Force - Kofi Boakye

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye has warned that the police in the region may consider using brutal force to subdue any group of political party hooligans who may destabilize the second phase of the limited registration exercise.

At least 3 registration centers were destabilized by both supporters of the NDC and NPP when they clashed at the center over alleged registration of minor’s in the first phase of limited voter registration exercise.

This led to destruction of EC’s voter’s registration machine and other properties of the electoral commission.

Speaking with Ultimate Fm after Ashanti regional council security review meeting in Kumasi Tuesday, the Ashanti police Chief warned the police will not tolerate any violence activities in the second phase of the exercise.

He added that the police have outlined several security measures to avoid hooligans having a field day at the registration centres, such as a ban on a group of motor bikes going beyond 100m radius from a registration centre and also massing up of people at a registration centre.

“These are a precursor to the chaos that has been witnessed in some registration centres. We’re going to enforce these directives to the letter. Apart from this, we have done our analysis, we’ve seen some areas that we need to put police/military on stand by so that they can react appropriately and immediately.”
