"We All Have Expiry Dates, Let's Unite"- Politicians Advised

Mr Emmanuel Atta-Akyea, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, has advised politicians not to allow their different political convictions to divide them but do things that will engender fraternity and fellow-feeling among themselves, because of the transient nature of human life.

“Let’s all be aware that we all have expiry dates so harboring hatred and bitterness against each other, especially from the opposite side, would not bring the peace and unity we need to serve the people whose interest we represent, being at the opposite does not mean we are enemies fighting each other”.

Mr Atta-Akyea, made the statement at a ceremony to confer honorary doctorate awards on the East Akim Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Peter Simon Asirifi and two others at Kyebi.

He called on all politicians irrespective of their party affiliation to promote peace and unity in their utterances and actions as the general elections approached to ensure a peaceful and acceptable elections.

The MP said his presence at the ceremony was to demonstrate exemplary leadership to strike home the point that as leaders entrusted with responsibilities, they ought to co-exist peacefully to be able to execute the mandate entrusted to them by the people and prove their ability to serve.

He spoke of the healthy relationship between the MCE him though each belonged to the opposite side and said it was not surprising that an institution had recognized and rewarded his hard work and its impact on the people.

Mr Asirifi, who also added to calls for peace urged political leaders to demonstrate to their followers that politics was not warfare and that despite the differences, they were one.

He urged the youth in the area to take a cue from the example of the MP for attending a ceremony in which he the MCE from the opposite side was being awarded and stop the hate speeches and insults on radio to promote peace.

The MCE and the two others were awarded with honorary doctorate degrees, for the good impact their hard work has had in the community.
