AU Day Is Just A Holiday That Has No Significance Atik Mohammed

The General Secretary of the People's National Convention (PNC), Atik Mohammed says AU holiday is irrelevant and should be scrapped.

Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's Flagship programme 'Kokrokoo', Atik Mohammed noted that the celebration of African Union (AU) as a national holiday is unproductive due to the absence of some basic values that Africa as a continent must first incorporate.

According to him, Africa Union should take cues from other Unions like the European Union (EU), claiming Africa must form a "monetary union".

The monetary union, in his words, will help boost the African continent.

He also noted that despite some achievements of the AU, Africa however lags behind so far as progress is concerned.

Dwelling on Ghana, Atik Mohammed wondered why government would sacrifice a whole productive day to recognize AU.

To him, Ghana has not done well in celebrating AU day because there is little or no education about the Union in the nation.

He noted that some people are ignorant of what the AU day signifies.

They "feel this is a day to go to the beach. A day to go to club and day to just sleep off in the house; there’s no significance attached to it . . . It’s just a holiday that has no significance," he stated.

Atik Mohammed therefore called on government to wipe out AU day from the already "wasted days" that to him, Ghana has set aside as holiday.

Apart the historical significance and the symbolism that we are still trying, beyond that; it has no relevance . . . I don’t support the idea that we should sacrifice one productive day to do nothing because that day, nobody is thinking about Africa Union. Nobody is thinking about the integration of Africa because of that particular day.
