3 NPP Chairmen Drag EC to Court

Three New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairmen in the Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo and Upper East Regions have teamed up to file a writ of mandamus against the Electoral Commission (EC) if it fails to furnish them with names of all persons who registered with the national Health Insurance cards in all constituencies in their respective regions.

The chairmen, Mohammed Murtala Ibrahim, Upper East; Kwaku Asomah Cheremeh, Brong-Ahafo and Benard Antwi Boasiako, Ashanti, acting through their solicitors- ‘Enso Nyame Ye Chambers ‘ – are making the request in a letter sighted by DAILY GUIDE titled, ‘Notice To Seek Redress In Court By Way of Judicial Review ,’ and addressed to the EC on 6th June, 2016.

This follows earlier two requests made to the national electoral body on 8th July and 19th August, 2015 by the three chairmen.

According to them, their requests made to the national electoral body on 8th July and 19 August, 2015 by the three chairmen.

According to them, their request had become necessary In the light of the Supreme Court order in the Abu Ramadan and Evans Nimako versus EC and the Attorney General case.

The apex court had ordered the Electoral Commission to delete the names of all persons in the voter register who registered with NHIS cards.

The NPP regional chairmen are therefore once again asking the EC as a matter of urgency, to furnish them constituency by constituency the total number of voters who used the NHIS cards to register in their regions from 2012 till date.

In addition to that, the EC is also to provide lists of all those who were registered outside the country for the 2012 general election as indicated by the former chairman of the EC, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan during the hearing of 2012 election petition.

They have warned that “refusal or failure to respond to our humble request will lead to application or innovation of judicial review in the form of mandamus.”
