Acting Director-General of Prisons, Mr. Emmanuel Yao Adzator, has disclosed that the Ghana Prisons Service is to re-open its Kokofu Prison, and establish a new settlement camp prison at Ejura in the Ashanti Region.
This move, according to him, is aimed at expanding the Service’s agricultural activities to improve food production in the country, create space for reformation and rehabilitation, and decongest the densely populated prisons.
According to the Ashanti Regional Prisons Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Prison (ASP) Richard Bukari, the acting director-general revealed this in his two-day tour of the region, where he held durbars with prison officers.
Mr. Adzator hinted that government and the Prisons Service Council through the ‘Efiase Project,’ was undertaking projects and programmes aimed at improving and expanding prison infrastructure that would inure to the benefit of both officers and prison inmates.
“I admonish you not to rest on your oars, but work hard to make our outlined plans successful. I also call on individuals and corporate bodies to come to the aid of Ghana Prisons Service, as government alone cannot manage it to make it deliver on its mandate effectively,” he added.
Mr. Adzator also mentioned that due to the Service’s adherence to International Corrections Standards as enshrined in the United Nations Charter, it has been made to chair the African Correctional Service Association (ACSA), which was hitherto chaired by South Africa.
Ashanti Regional Prisons Commander, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Lord Nii Boye Tagoe, expressed appreciation to the Ag. director-general for the visit, and appealed to officers to co-operate with leadership for a successful implementation of prison policies.
The Prisons boss also as part of the tour visited the Kumasi Female Prison, Amanfrom, Ahinsan, Obuasi, and the Manhyia Prisons to interact with officers, and acquaint himself with current developments.
