The opposition NPP’s Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, has said she is aiming to retain the seat in the 2016 legislative election by polling more votes than she did in 2012.
Ms Botchway, four years ago, polled 51,196, representing 63.41 per cent of total votes cast, defeating her nearest rival, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), who managed 29,536 (36.59%).
Ms Botchway, who launched her campaign for re-election on Saturday July 9, said she was rallying her supporters to “work hard” towards that realisation.
“This time, we want to widen the gap, and to do that we need to whip up morale among our followers and move into houses and do all other things we will need to do as part of the campaign,” she said on Accra100.5FM’s breakfast show, Ghana Yensom, Monday July 11, saying that she was aiming to leave her closest contender trailing her with a minimum of 50,000 clear votes.
The lawmaker revealed that her focus this term would be on healthcare, since that is a “major issue”, for which reason she has put up a clinic in her area with another set to open in a different part of her constituency, in a few weeks, also through her own initiative.
Further, Ms Botchway disclosed that attention would be given to provision of street lights to improve security in the constituency at night while scholarships would be made available for “brilliant but needy” students, since there were a lot of people within Anyaa-Sowutuom, who are unable to afford fees for their children.
Asked if she was not fazed by competition from political opponents, Ms Botchway was confident of her chances, saying: “At the end of the day, we will see what happens, but I know by the special grace of God, I will be very victorious because of the things I have accomplished [for my people].”
