EC Must Regain Public Trust By Being Transparent Ex-Prez Kufour

President John Agyekum Kufour has admonished the Electoral Commission to aim at maintaining transparency and fairness during November’s election. This, he said, will help eliminate suspicion about their inability to be fair and impartial.

Several critics of the EC claim the image of the commission is being dented by recent agitations over the credibility of the voters’ register. The lawyer for Abu Ramadan, who recently dragged the Commission to the Supreme Court over the credibility of the register, Abu Jinapor stated that “the posturing of the Electoral Commission of Ghana is extremely worrying” and could “completely erode public confidence and trust” in them.

According to Kufuor, the EC in the past has not lived up to expectations hence the diminishing public confidence in the electoral processes. He thus challenged the commission to work at gaining back the trust of the people.

“There is a lot of argument going on now and it’s not something that has come instantaneously. There is a history to it. In the past things haven’t been to expectation and because of that a lot of suspicion has been left in the system,” Kufuor told Accra-based GHone.

“So everything should be done by the current electoral commission to eradicate the suspicions in a fair way. That is the only way the people will support it in its responsibility of ensuring the country is well served.”
