Lets Create Enabling Environment For The Physically Challenged

Mr Iddisa Adams, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kwabre, has called for the creation of an environment that would enable disabled people to be integrated into the society. He said this would enable them to participate actively in the socio-economic development of the country. Mr. Adams was addressing the closing session of a graduation/exhibition ceremony for 14 disabled persons drawn from various communities in the district at Mamponteng. They underwent a four-week skills training in batik, tie and dye organised by the district assembly in conjunction with the Centre for National Culture (CNC) It was designed to complement governments efforts at improving the standard of living of the physically challenged through self-employment and the promotion of business diversification in the district, noted for its kente weaving and handicraft industry. Mr. Stephen Anderson, the District Cultural Officer, said the CNC and the assembly had planned to establish a training centre where some of the participants would be posted to train Junior High School students in tie and dye and other vocational skills. He said the assembly would introduce a second training programme in pomade and powder making. Nana Kyerew Akenten II, Queen of Mamponteng, commended the assembly for organizing the course and said it was her hope that the participants would do well to put the skills acquired into practice and help to train their colleagues. Mr. Isaac Obeng, Secretary, Coalition of Physically Disabled in the District appealed to the Assembly to assist them with start-up capital to set up their businesses.
