Two suspected thieves would have been lynched by a mob at Butumegyabu, a community in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis last Sunday but for the incessant pleas of some relatives.
The two suspects, identified as Nana Kwame and Nana Ahenfia, all 15 years, were said to have robbed residents of the Butumegyabu of their belongings.
Luck eluded the suspects last Sunday when they were arrested around 1am at Butumegyabu, near the Takoradi Polytechnic campus with stolen items such as laptops, mobile phones and other items.
According to reports, the residents arrested the two suspects, tied them to a tree and allegedly subjected them to severe beatings.
They later put used car tyres around their necks in an attempt to burn them.
But the suspects were eventually released after some relatives revealed that they were residents of the area.
The irate residents therefore rescinded their decision to burn the two suspects. Confirming the story in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, Joe Gray, a resident in the area, noted that the suspects allegedly broke into homes and hostels of T-Poly students to steal their belongings.
He asserted that the suspects usually sell the stolen items in Tema.
The parents of one of the suspects lives in Tema but hails from the area and because the parents are well respected in the community, most of the residents pleaded for their release, Mr Gray pointed out.
When DAILY GUIDE asked about the whereabouts of the suspects, Joe Gray said “we should have sent them to the police station but the family members pleaded and they were released. I know one of them is currently in Tema.”
