Arabic To Be Examinable At WASSCE

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that beginning next year, Arabic will be an examinable subject at the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) level.

Additionally, the language is to be examinable at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) level from 2018.

To ensure the realisation of the new policy, President Mahama said, his government was supporting Colleges of Education in training more Islamic scholars and teachers.

President Mahama gave the assurance in a speech read on his behalf by the Chief of Staff, Mr. Julius Debrah, at the formal inauguration of the Federation of Islamic Senior High Schools in Ghana (FISHSIG) in Accra on Saturday.

To ensure a continuation of the country’s developmental agenda, the President said in as much as there was a strong desire to encourage Islamic studies there should be a concerted effort towards empowering Islamic institutions to teach and train students in other academic and skilled fields.

The newly elected president of FISHSIG, Sheikh Mohammed Kamil said the association would serve as the umbrella organisation of all 39 Islamic Senior High School, to partner stakeholders, to contribute to towards quality and accessible education.

Delivering a speech on the topic, ‘The role of Islamic SHS towards the development of education in Ghana,’ Alhaji Mohammed Haroon, Northern Regional Director of Education, advised the executives of the federation to collaborate with the national Muslim leadership, to build school infrastructure and enhance teaching and learning.
