Anglican Bishop Calls for Women Empowerment

Right Reverend Emmanuel Anyindana Arongo, Anglican Bishop of the Tamale Diocese at the weekend called on churches to give audience to women issues by making deliberate efforts to empower them to take up roles in the church. He said the practice where some churches relegate women to the background did not augur well for the smooth growth of the church in its entirety and therefore proposed an affirmative action to empower women to take up roles in the various churches to make Christianity all embracing. The Bishop made the call at the Bishop Angloby Cathedral Parish in Tamale to induct Ms. Mavis Morna, the Diocesan Mother's Union Worker of the church into office. As a Mother's Union Worker, Ms. Morna would coordinate all the activities of the union in the various parishes in the diocese. She is expected to draw up an outreach programme and undertake any other activity deemed necessary for the growth of the union. The Bishop made it clear that women were more active and committed in terms of church activities and said it was therefore the moral duty of church authorities to make them active part of church structures to realize their full potential. Bishop Arongo cautioned Ms Morna to be weary of the possible temptation to abuse her position saying "she should see the post as a way of offering her service to humanity and Christ's church and to bring women even closer to Christ". He indicated that there was poverty in the three northern regions where the church had its members and urged Ms. Morna to introduce more innovative plans that could give employable skills to members of the union. Ms. Morna thanked members of the church for the trust reposed in her and pledged to offer her service to all women within the church for the good of Christ's work and called for cooperation from her fellow women to enable her work efficiently. Other executive members of the Union include five patrons and an enrolled member. They are the Bishop and his wife Mrs. Dorcas Arongo, Mr. Joseph Ayamga, Madam Vivian Abenim, and Mr. Maxwell Zong. The enrolled member is Ms. Charlotte Lartson. The Mothers' Union is within 12 branches of the church and has about 500 members.
