Driver Convicted Over Ganja

An Accra Circuit Court yesterday sentenced a young driver to pay a fine of GH¢1,440 for possessing 11 wrappers of wee.

The convict, Nii Armah Richard, admitted using narcotic substance without lawful authority.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector K. Adu told the court that the convict hid the drug in his pockets on April 20, this year at Gbawe-Bulemi in Accra.

Appearing before trial judge Aboagye Tandoh, the convict, who was without a lawyer, admitted the offence and was convicted on his own plea.

In sentencing Nii, the judge said the convict had pleaded for leniency so as to undertake genuine work to cater for his daughter.

Mr. Tandoh ordered the convict to pay a fine or in default serve six-month jail term.

The court also ordered the destruction of the substance three months after the judgement under the supervision of the registrar of the court.

C/Insp. Adu told the court that on the fateful day, the Odorkor Police Patrol team, led by Inspector Habada Amuzu, undertook routine operation within their jurisdiction.

He said the team proceeded to Gbawe-Bulemi where the convict was arrested whilst he was engaged in an argument with a neighbour.

The prosecutor said a search conducted on Nii revealed that the substance in his shots.

Nii, in his caution statement, told the police that he smokes wee before the start of the day’s work.
