The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said it will launch its manifesto for the 2016 elections on September 17 in Sunyani, the capital of the Brong Ahafo Region, the party’s campaign spokesperson Joyce Bawa-Mogtari has said.
“…Whatever we [NDC] do is usually based on strategy, it’s based on tact, and above all that we are a party that is actually in government. So, we do believe that our manifesto will be providing Ghanaians a semblance of what to expect in our second and final term of President Mahama. So, for our part, we continue to implement our existing manifesto…and you know that the NDC since 2004 has actually never launched its election campaign together with its manifesto,” she told Prince Minkah on the Executive Breakfast Show on Class91.3FM.
“The two are normally separate events so we expect that after the launch, the media and every well-meaning Ghanaian will have access to the document to critique it to the best of their ability…”
The Deputy Minister of Transport denied allegations that the NDC delayed the launch of its manifesto so it could steal ideas from the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“The NDC is in government so what will we have to lose if we either release our manifesto early or later? So for those who are struggling to come to power, of course there might be a good reason why they would want to keep their manifesto under wraps. …I know that our manifesto is ready. We’ve just been working in a very strategic way to launch our campaign first, kick-start the campaign to galvanise our base, to unite our base, to provide certain a guidance to our base and then, of course, launch the manifesto almost as having a main meal in the course of the day. So, for us, we are on course and we have not in any way delayed any of our activities. In fact the manifesto launch would have been actually last week but you know that President Mahama had to go to Nairobi to participate in this all-important international conference (TICAD) so we are almost set now …”
She added: “Our manifesto is ready, the president continues to undertake several other engagements so we have finally agreed that we’ll be launching our manifesto on the 17th of this month … so for our part we are ready to go…”
