Leap Is A Killer Policy... Economist Warns

An Economist who lecturers at the Kumasi Polytechnic, Mr. Thomas Kusi Boafo has said the Government is smothering Ghanaians with ‘killer’ policies which will eventually cripple the economy.

According to Boafo, all indicators attest to the fact that the economy is getting worse as each day passes by but was quick to attribute the situation to policies like LEAP that seeks to aid in maximizing votes for the ruling Party.

Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, is a social cash transfer programme that provides cash and health insurance to the extremely poor households across the country and is aimed at alleviating short-term poverty and encourage long-term human capital development. LEAP was launched in 2008 as Ghana’s flagship programme of the National Social Protection Strategy and was largely funded by the government of Ghana and supported by the World Bank and DFID. It also receives technical support from UNICEF’s social protection unit and is currently administered by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and managed by the department of social welfare.

But speaking on an Accra based radio station, Boafo noted it is dangerous for government to inject monies onto LEAP noting the number of beneficiaries surpasses the working class of the country.

‘Ghana’s ailing economy can be healed after 3 years with a well-structured economic policies but if the ruling party’s aim is just to win elections and as such inject monies into just any policy, then the economy will eventually collapse. Leap is a killer policy. The government claims to have registered over 800,000 people onto the leap policy and such people can only be taken off after death. That move is a dangerous one and will jeopardize the fortunes of our already sick economy’ he said
