SOME rascals under the influence of marijuana, popularly known as wee, over the weekend invaded Kwabena Kumi, a community near Suhum in the Eastern Region to cause mayhem after smoking wee and drinking ‘wee bitters,’ an alcoholic drink mixed with wee.

The exhibition of marijuana smoking bravado ended up in a horrific incident where a first time smoker suffered sensory distortion and hallucination which led to him violently plucking out the eyeball of a 62-year-old man in the community.

The eyeball of the 62-year-old man, Kwabena Ofori was plucked out in an attack without provocation by a young man later identified to be a member of a gang of criminals.

The incident occurred at Kwabena Kumi, a community near Suhum in the Eastern Region on Friday night at about 10:40 pm. The victim was hospitalised at the Suhum

Government Hospital but has been transferred to an eye specialist at Akwatia GCD Hospital.

According to Fautina Agyei, sister of the victim, they were asleep when they heard unusual noise in the house. Curious to know what was going on, they went out only to see a young man causing confusion in the house.

When approached, he attacked the victim without provocation by pushing him down in an attempt to kill him, but the victim was saved by residents who got awoken by the incident.

However, it was later discovered after the victim was rushed to the hospital that the eyeball had been removed.

Madam Agyei said the eyeball was later taken to the hospital. Meanwhile, the Police in Suhum have arrested two persons in connection with the crime.

Residents of the Kwabena- Kumi community are calling for police visibility in the area. According to the residents, criminals are taking advantage of the absence of the Police in the area to perpetuate anti-social vices which include smoking of marijuana. Residents say the community is becoming a hideout for many criminals in the Suhum Municipality.

The Daily Heritage has gathered that, some bar operators in the community produce a concoction of marijuana mixed with alcohol known locally as ‘wee bitters’ or ‘Laka’ which records high patronage by the youth from surrounding communities.

The Guantoahene of Kwabena Kumi, Nana Okyere told the Daily Heritage that the community needs a police post or must be empowered to form watch-dog committees to curb the menace.
