What Authority Does EC Have To Charge Those Fees? - Charles Owusu Quizzes

A member of the Progressive People's Party (PPP) Communication Team, Charles Owusu has challenged the basis for the filing fees for Presidential and Parliamentary nomination forms by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Charles Owusu has asked the Chairperson of the Commission, Madam Charlotte Osei to provide the legal framework for the collection of the stipulated GHC 10000 and 50000 for the Parliamentary and Presidential forms respectively.

Speaking on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, he held strongly that it is unlawful for the Commission to charge such fees.

He described the Commission's filing fees as an act to extort money from the nominees.

"What law and authority forms the basis for the EC's collection of such money?" he questioned.

He therefore advised the EC Boss to do what's necessary and not just what she thinks is expedient for the Commission.

Charles Owusu further threw his weight behind his party leadership for sending the matter to court.

He believed the court will help bring justice to the case and disclose whether the EC's action is constitutional or outside the country's laws.
